3. Comments.

  a. When the companies move on a tactical mission with the combat commands, one reconnaissance section of an officer and two men is attached to each company. The section normally moves with the point of the advanced guard in order that he may inform the Engineer Company Commander of any engineer work required to keep the combat command moving. Another mission of the reconnaissance officer is to keep the Battalion Commander informed of the situation. If the Battalion Commander, or a member of his staff, is unable to visit the company, the reconnaissance officer reports back to the battalion with the latest information.

SECTION II
S-2, INTELLIGENCE

1. Enemy Situation at End of Period. Does not apply.

2. Enemy Operations During Period. Does not apply.

3. Section Operations.

1-31 March. During the period, the S-2 section received and distributed maps in preparation for operations east of the Rhine. Extensive terrain studies were made, the results of which were distributed to elements of the Division. A sand table 12' x 15' was constructed with the RHINE RIVER the west boundary, the LIPPE RIVER the north boundary, the RHEIN-HERNE CANAL the south boundary, and the 45 grid coordinate the east boundary. The reconnaissance officers held classes to discuss the terrain details with officers of other units of the Division, who in turn used the sand table for instructional purposes within their respective units.

Engineer reconnaissance was continuous. The reconnaissance section found numerous stockpiles of engineer material (See Section IV), and reported road and bridge information which was consolidated and disseminated to the elements of the Division. In addition, they discovered that the enemy was using aerial bombs for demolition charges at road junctions, tank ditches, and on railroad and highway bridges. As a result of the information obtained it was possible for the bombs to be removed. (See Section III) The reconnaissance sections assisted the S-3 section by reconnoitering for German mines to be used for training the units of the Division. (See Section III)

The S-2 section published and distributed two Engineer Information Bulletins (See Annex A, Section III, Journals dated 9 and 24 March).

4. Weather and Terrain.

The weather was generally good with rain during the first part of the month.
Terrain was rolling with numerous groves of trees.
