Heidi Fishman, E-mail - heidifishman@gmail.com |
Unit Unk |
Heidi Fishman seeks information on Lloyd Miller, 8th Armored Division, unit unknown. He was at the airfield in Pilsen in June of 1945 and was of great help to her mother, Ruth Lichtenstern and her family who were Displaced Persons and had just been liberated from Theresienstadt concentration camp in Czechoslavakia. Ruth was ten years old at the time and didn't know much English. She spoke German and Dutch. She remembers that Lloyd Miller came from a state with a strong "O" sound. Whether that "O" was the first letter as in Oklahoma or a middle or last letter as in Colorado, she can't be sure of now. |

Jerry Esrig, Son of Donald Esrig, E-mail - Jerry.esrig@gmail.com |
36-B |
Jerry is trying to gather information on his father, Donald Esrig, who was in 36th Tank Company B and was captured on March 5, 1945 when was his tank was knocked out in Rheinberg, he believes. He is guessing he was in one of the three tanks knocked out in the town referenced in the after action reports. He is trying to figure out which tank he was in, who else was with him and what happened after he was captured. His understanding is that he was held for about 60 days and then the Germans abandoned the POW camp right before VE Day. |

Roy Pfennings, Historian, Roerdreihoek Museum, Montfort, Holland. E-mail - info@roerdreihoek.com |

In our archives we have a story (interview made by a local historian) from a German Fallschirmjäger (Paratrooper) who made an assault with his group on the Basilica in Sint-Odiliënberg, near Montfort Holland, which at that moment was occupied by the British.
Three years ago we had a visit from a British veteran at our museum who told us his story about a German assault on the Basilica when he was there. They stayed at the Basilica for two weeks and at his birthday they where relieved by the Americans. This was a platoon from 49th Armored Infantry Bn. They had been attacked by night and shot at by snipers at daylight for two weeks, and when the Americans came by daylight...nothing happened. This relief by the Americans was February 16th 1945. The Americans stayed there for another 12 days and I guess they got the same assaults and sniper attacks by the Germans like the British.
I wonder if there are any US veterans of the 49th Armored Inf. Bn. who can remember that they have relieved the British at the Basilica of Sint-Odiliënberg (Paarlo) and stayed there for almost two weeks.
It would be wonderful if we have this event complete for all three involved.
Best Regards, Roy Pfennings
