H E A D Q U A R T E R S 398th Armored Field Artillery Battalion A.P.O. 258 %POSTMASTER NEW YORK, NEW YORK
25 June, 1945
To: All Personnel
The history of the 398th en route to and through the hectic days of combat may
not be as colorful as that of some of the other armored units; yet to us it was every bit as exciting, dangerous, and, at times, filled with sorrow.
In these pages we have set forth only dates, places, and events without an attempt to write a story - just facts that will serve as a reminder to you of some particular time, place, or event that may have been a high spot in your service - something for "Bull sessions" with old buddies in days to come.
Now V-E day has passed, and we are being broken up with a few of us being sent to our homes, other units scheduled to continue the fight against Japan, and some to other jobs.
Consequently, I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of my heart for the splendid cooperation given me during the time it was my privilege to command the battalion. It was your work and tireless efforts in hard thankless jobs, in good weather and bad, that made the 398th an organization of which you can justly be proud.
Our record speaks for itself. Never once did we let the infantry and tankers down for want or need of support. When they were struggling against tough opposition, an "on
the way" was a welcome sound lending them new courage and determination, together with the realization that the "good old 398th" was on the job, up front in most cases, where supporting fires could be delivered where and when needed.
To each of you, good luck in your new assignment; may our paths cross again.
