Purpose of the Web Site

General Information

To develop and maintain an Internet web site for veterans of the 8th Armored Division of World War II, and their descendants. The Association is composed of any veterans of the Division and/or their family members who may wish to join. A link to a membership form is provided on the home page.

Sources:

Information on the web site comes from many places. Original documents (copies of course) have been used where available. Any information received from Division members is accepted as is and none of the sources are checked. This is due to the age of the documents, memory of the submitters (most of us are over 80 years old) and age of me who just doesn't have time or inclination to get into a historical documents verification project.

The sources for large blocks of data are listed but it is impossible to list each man who helped with information or corrections.

Viewing Requirements:

The site is best viewed using one of the following browsers with JavaScript and computer style sheets (CCS) enabled - Microsoft Internet Explorer v 4.0 or higher, or Netscape Navigator v4.0 or higher.

Please note that this site may use slightly larger than normal font sizes in some cases since many of our older viewere can read better using the larger fonts.

Approvals:

This is an unofficial 8th Armored Division Association web site and has not been approved by anyone. An official Association web site would probably have required approval by the members and/or the Association's officers. Some funding may also have been necessary depending on what was approved.

An unofficial site avoids all this and can be changed quickly as necessary. It can receive reasonable suggestions for improvements from members and act on them without waiting for any official approvals. (Remember how long it took to get things done in the Army?).

The Association has generously provided some funds for maintaining the website and any suggestions and comments are always welcome from them. Many, many members have provided documents and information for our use but neither they or the Association are to be held accountable in any way for how the content has been used or displayed.

Content:

The following description covers content that may be included:

1. Except for Association officers and/or officials, member's street address will not be included for privacy considerations. Anyone listed on any page may have his name removed by sending an email to Scott Thorpe, webmaster

2. Various lists will be published from time to time including new members, members who have died, company rosters if available, etc. Hometown addresses, if provided, will be listed for those who have died so their friends may better identify them.

3. We will post photographs, letters, stories, maps, etc. which we may have or receive.

4. Miscellaneous items that may be of interest will be published.

5. The site will contain an abbreviated history of the Division.

6. Bad language is not included but will not be precluded if necessary for emphasis. (You know there is no way we could use the language used in those days.)

7. The site contents will also be reviewed and possibly modified from time to time especially if it approaches the maximum data storage limit provided by the ISP.

8. We welcome new material from members at any time. We will post most new information received if it is appropriate and does not take unreasonable amounts of storage.

9. It was necessary to retype most of the rosters and individual information received because of the age of the original copies. They could not be scanned and in many cases were even hard to read. We apologize for any mistakes and will correct any that we are notified about.

Cost to Members:

There is no cost to Association members for maintaining this web site. There are however very minimal annual Association dues assessed to members. These are used to mail newsletters, organize reunions, and pay other Association expenses.

Note from Okey Taylor, 58-C. Original webmaster and developer of this site

New material, remarks, comments, error corrections, improvements, criticisms, etc. are welcome. Please send to the new webmaster Scott Thorpe, son of Walter Thorpe, 58-C. If you have anything of interest, please send it along, copies only of course. If you have original material, please contact the Association President.

This was a fun project for me and has saved me from the horrors of daytime television. I would like to thank all those men with the foresight to keep old records, photos, orders, etc, without knowing that someday they would be historical documents. I came out of the army with my uniforn and three GI blankets which I still take to winter football games. Isn't it too bad the quality of the government as well of the things it currently purchases have deteriorated to such an extent.

One thing that still needs to be done is to cross-reference names shown on pictures, listed in After Action Reports, and on signed official records with the appropriate roster in case these men were missed previously. This will be a time consuming project and I have just not been able to do it yet. Okey. 26 Dec, 2009.
