  And here for you combat veterans are a few gems of Murphy's Laws of Combat as drawn up by retired Army Sgt. First Class Wayne Phipps and published in his book.

  • There are only two rules in war:
      Rule 1 - There are no rules.
      Rule 2 - See rule one.

  • Military intelligence can be a contradiction in terms.

  • The easy way is always mined.

  • Incoming fire has the right of way.

  • Make it too tough for the enemy to get in and you can't get out.

  • If the enemy is within range, so are you.

  • Never draw fire. It irritates everyone around you.

  • No combat ready unit ever passed inspection.

  • Don't look conspicuous. It draws fire.

  • Teamwork is essential. It gives them other people to shoot at.

  • Never share a foxhole with anyone braver than you.

  • Remember, your weapon was made by the lowest bidder.

  • If your attack is going really well, it's an ambush.

  • Try to look unimportant. They may be low on ammo.

  • Don't worry about the one 'with your name on it.' It is the one addressed: 'To whom it may concern.'
