Czechoslovakia Occupation and photos from Pilsen and surrounding area.
Photo album from local citizens of Stankov, Czechoslovakia, near Pilsen. This village was liberated by units of the 8th Armored Division on 6 May 1945. Vehicles can be identified as 53-Hq. Album provided by Tomas Poruba of the Czech Republic. Translation of text on page 1 as follows: "A national flag that proclaims peace, was hung out on a municipal office building the 6th May. A peoples committee was set up. Citizens listen to instruction and they sped to welcome a passing victorious American Army." Page 7: "German soldiers are laying down arms and Americans transport them to prisoner or war camps." Additional pictures can be found mingled in with Company Pictures. Officially, ordinary soldiers were not permitted to take cameras on combat campaigns but this was impossible to police. Once hostilities ended, cameras proliferated and this accounts for the many post-combat and occupation era photos on this website. 11 April 2019
