INTERVIEW
1st Lt. Roy F. Triner, CO, Company F, 88th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), 1330 hours, 13 March 1945, Glabbach, Germany, to Lt. Kitts.
F Company crossed the Roer River at Hilfarth at 0130 hours 27 February and marched north to Golkrath, arriving there at 0900 hours 28 February. On the 1st of March 1945 they marched with the 88th Rcn Squadron (less Troops A, B and C) north to Amern St. Georg, arriving there at 0200 hours 2 March. Route reconnaissance for this march was furnished by F Company. On the 3rd the squadron marched to Kempen, north to Hornenhof (086154) then east to Stenden, (107139).
Company F established outputs at Tonisberg (141136), Schaephysen (129169) and the crossroads at 120196. These outposts remained in position during the night 3-4 March.
At 0640 hours 4 March the 137th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division approached the positions of the 3d platoon of Company F at the crossroads at 120196 on its way to Rheurdt (128179). Upon determining their mission the 3rd platoon gave their assistance with five light tanks and moved south with the 137th Infantry. The 3d platoon knocked out two 75 mm AT guns and one ammunition truck in assisting in the capture of that town.
The next mission of the 137th was the clearing of the two points of high ground at 162198 and 156213 to the northeast of Rheurdt. Company F joined the 137th in a coordinated tank-infantry attack on these two hills. The enemy was driven from the high ground there and Company F established a base of fire for the forthcoming attack on Lintfort about 1600 yards to the northeast. A few rounds were fire into factories on the southwest edge of Lintfort before night fell.
At 0415 hours 5 March Company F was pulled back to Aldekerk (184167) to regroup for an attack with the 137th Infantry on Lintfort. This mission was cancelled before the jump-off and the squadron pulled back to Stenden at 0600 hours the same date.
On the 6th of March the squadron was attached to the 35th Infantry Division for the mission of clearing the area bounded by Rheinberg - Budberg - Orsoy and the Rhine River. Company F made the following attachments for this operations: the first platoon went to A Troop; the second to C Troops; the third to D Troops. The rest of Company F remained in Lintfort.
Troop A with the first platoon cleared the area Lintfort to Orsoy and met no resistance. Troop C with the second platoon advanced from Hocht (252298) east to the Rhine and cleared that area and returned to Budberg for the night. Troop D on the left flank with the third platoon cleared the area east of Ossenberg to the Rhine and met no resistance. The enemy continued to surrender to reconnaissance troops during the day.
On 8 March Company F left with the rest of the squadron at 100 hours and left Lintfort for Glabbach and were relieved by the 75th Infantry Division.
